About the Program

Dresden Virtuosi: Pisendel & Graun

The January concert titled "Dresden Virtuosi" transports us to the musical world of Dresden in the first half of the 18th century. It was one of the most magnificent centers of Baroque Europe, renowned for its legendary court orchestra. It was within the circle of the Dresden Hofkapelle that a unique style crystallized, merging Italian emotionality with German compositional discipline. The central figure of this environment was Johann Georg Pisendel – a brilliant violinist and concertmaster. His works represent a rare marriage of technical brilliance and structural craftsmanship. It was in Dresden that Johann Gottlieb Graun studied, creatively developing his master’s style while pushing the boundaries of contemporary virtuosity even further. Juxtaposing the compositions of these two creators allows us to hear a fascinating dialogue between generations and showcases the evolution of one of the era’s most significant violin schools. The presented repertoire reveals the full spectrum of the instrument’s capabilities – from dramatic affetti to lyrical cantilena and graceful dance-like lightness. The foundation of this program – consisting entirely of violin concertos by Pisendel and Graun – is the long-standing artistic friendship between Katarzyna Anna Olszewska and the Arte dei Suonatori orchestra. This collaboration served as the natural impulse to explore a repertoire that is particularly close to the hearts of all the performers.
